FAYETTEVILLE, AR (KNWA) - The Fayetteville Half Marathon organizers have rescheduled race events for Saturday, Dec. 21.
The half marathon, which also includes a 5k and one-mile fun run, was slated for Sunday but was canceled because of the icy conditions on the planned course routes.
Race organizers announced the decision Tuesday, saying they could not offer a reschedule date refunds or transfers to different races, as stated in the race forms. But backlash from disappointed racers was swift and loud. Many posted to the race Facebook page to ask for better follow up and calling into question the decision to keep participant fees.
"Why can't this be rescheduled?" wrote one poster. "This race doesn't even support a charity, it's simply a business decision to cancel the race. I completely understand covering the costs associated with putting on this race...but the excess should be refunded."
So Friday morning, paid racers got a message announcing the reschedule information.
All three races will take place on the Lake Fayetteville paved trail system near the softball complex beginning at 9:15 a.m. All runners registered for events originally scheduled for Dec. 15 are automatically registered for the Dec. 21 event or can transfer their entry to the 2014 event.
"We know that our original decision to cancel the event without providing our participants with value for their registration fee was a mistake," race staff said in a statement. "We were wrong. But we listened to our customers – you the running community – and we have worked hard to develop better options."
The news release went on to say that all proceeds from new registrations for the Dec. 21 race will be donated to the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks.
