Volunteers Needed for LRSD Reading Day Nov. 19

The goal is to have a volunteer reader in each of the 652 elementary classrooms that day.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - Hundreds of volunteers are needed by the Little Rock School District (LRSD) for its ViPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) Jane Mendel Reading Day on Nov. 19.

ViPS is recruiting volunteer readers with the goal of having one in each of the LRSD's 652 elementary classrooms on that day.

Volunteers can read one of their favorite children's stories, or choose a book from the school library.

ViPS says it only takes thirty minutes to share your love of reading with the students. Volunteer readers should register immediately online (click here to access the form) or by calling ViPS at (501) 447-8477.

ViPS was founded in 1972 to provide assistance to teachers and other staff members of the LRSD by promoting school volunteerism. ViPS serves as a link between the District and the community while providing patrons and citizens an opportunity to be significantly involved in the education of children.

Volunteers in Public Schools (ViPS) provides support and coordination for school volunteer programs and for connecting students to volunteers in the community. Programs include ViPS, Partners In Education, Vital Link, Project Mentor, field trips and classroom speakers.

According to the LRSD website, during the 2012 - 2013 school year, thousands of volunteers contributed a total of 825,274 hours with an estimated worth over $18 million.
