Town of 75 Has $47,000+ Missing

Legislators say they plan to ask leaders from the town of Weldon back to the state capitol in September after they failed to show up Thursday for an audit.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - Legislators say they plan to ask leaders from the town of Weldon back to the state capitol in September after they failed to show up Thursday for an audit.

A legislative audit released Thursday shows the city treasurer in the Jackson County town mishandled $47,893 dollars between January 2010 and October 2012.

The audit states the treasurer resigned, but the money still has not been paid back to the city's street fund.

State senator Johnny Key (R-Mountain Home) asked that the audit for Weldon be moved until September.

"I understand that sometimes small towns don't have full time elected officials," Key says.  "But we work very well when they communicate with us to say something came up, that happens all the time.  So when we just don't here from someone that's a little disturbing."

Calls to numbers listed as city hall in Weldon were not immediately returned.
