Suspect Killed by Arkansas State Police after Standoff

A standoff ends in White County with the suspect dead.
JUDSONIA, AR --  A man is dead after a reported standoff with law enforcement officers Monday night.

Judsonia Police were called to the 100 block of Meadowview Circle around 8 p.m. Monday, where they found 40-year-old Charles Martin, who was reportedly threatening neighbors. Police say Martin refused to leave the house and reportedly fired at an officer.

State Police say they sent in a robot, but Martin shot and disabled it, then fired at police.

Officers returned fire, injuring Martin, who later died at a hospital.

Family members of Martin said he was on medication for mental issues.

"If he got upset over something, it was hard for him to calm down," says Nancy Medler, Martin's aunt. "If a family member could have talked to him, they would have calmed him down."

Special Agents of the State Police Criminal Investigation Division are now investigating the shooting and will submit an investigative file to the White County Prosecuting Attorney for purposes of determining if the use of deadly force by law enforcement officers in this incident was consistent with applicable state law.
