Searcy Grandmother Shot While Struggling with Grandson, Police Say

Monday morning incident happened at the woman's home on Heffner St.
EARCY, AR - A local woman is being treated in a Little Rock hospital after police say her own grandson shot her.

It happened Monday morning at the Heffner St. home of Rachel Maples, 65. As of Tuesday afternoon Maples was still being treated for an injury described only as "life threatening."

Searcy Police say officers were called to the scene around 8 a.m. for a reported suicide.

When officers arrived, Grant Crawford allegedly told them that his grandmother had shot herself.

During the course of the investigation, detectives determined that the man and woman were struggling over a gun when it fired and struck Maples.

Crawford, 24, is being held on $50,000 bond at the White County Law Enforcement Center on a charge of 2nd degree battery. His court date is March 4.
