Report: 250 Arkansans Have Selected Coverage in Health Insurance Marketplace

More than half the total number of Arkansans who have completed applications for coverage under the new Health Insurance Marketplace have been determined to potentially qualify for the Private Option.
LITTLE ROCK, AR -- More than half of the total number of Arkansans who have completed applications for coverage under the new Health Insurance Marketplace have been determined to potentially qualify for the Private Option.

On Wednesday, the Department of Health and Human Services released data detailing the activity of Arkansans in the new Health Insurance Marketplace.

In a news release issued Wednesday afternoon, Arkansas Insurance Commissioner Jay Bradford broke down the numbers, recorded from Oct. 1-Nov. 2, in terms of those who have completed applications for insurance through the new marketplace, those who have completed the selection process, and the number of Arkansans deemed eligible for the Private Option, among others.

According to DHHS, 7,294 applications for coverage have been completed in the Natural State, representing 14,059 individuals who would be covered, including 7,430 of whom were determined to potentially qualify for coverage under the Private Option.

A total of 6,123 Arkansans have deemed eligible for traditional private health insurance plans, with 2,279 of those applicants qualifying for premium assistance.

As of Nov. 2, a total of 250 people had successfully selected a plan, with another 506 applications pending.

These numbers did not include the 54,000 individuals who have already enrolled in private health insurance plans directly through the Private Option, according to Bradford.

"I’m very pleased that we have received enrollment data," Bradford said in a news release. "We know that Arkansans have been enrolling as improvements to HealthCare.gov continue."

Bradford says he anticipates the enrollment numbers to increase as the Dec. 15 deadline approaches for those wanting individual coverage to begin Jan. 1, 2014.

He also stated that enrollment will continue through March 31, 2014.
