Only in Arkansas: Dan's Whetstone

From the quarry to finished product, Kirschman touts his company as the only complete producer and supplier of all natural whetstone grades.
HOT SPRINGS, AR - After traveling the world, a mining engineer moved to Arkansas and started a business based on his love for the craft.

What he comes up with is a unique rock that can sharpen knives when processed just right.

"[It's the] finest stone in the world," remarked Dan Kirschman.

From the quarry to finished product, Kirschman touts his company as the only complete producer and supplier of all natural whetstone grades.

Producing nearly 350 natural Arkansas products, Dan's Whetstone is based just outside Hot Springs.

"Jewelers, goldsmiths, woodworkers, woodcarvers, gunsmithing," Kirschman, the president and founder, rattled off the list of clients.

The list of goes on but the whetstone is commonly known as a knife sharpening stone.

"But any kind of blade can be sharpened with Arkansas Whetstone," Kirschman clarified.

Made from sediment formation several million years in the making, the process starts with getting the material out of the ground.

"We do most of our blasting with black powder," Kirschman explained.

What started as a hobby nearly 40 years ago, Kirschman still considers himself retired.

"I've [been] doing my hobby ever since," he laughed.

He gets to spend his time crafting something you'll only find here.

"Arkansas is the only place where the quality of this material is found," he said.
