Oaklawn Opens Gates for 2014 Season

Despite rainy conditions, thousands flock to Hot Springs for live horse racing.
HOT SPRINGS, AR -- Since 1905, Oaklawn Park has hosted horse racing in Hot Springs.  On Friday, the 2014 season began with more than 15,000 fans flocking to the track despite rainy conditions.

"It's very exciting, I wish the weather could have been a little bit better, but you can't ever complain," one fan said.

"It's been a challenging weather week in Arkansas, and today was no exception," said Bobby Geiger, Oaklawn's Director of Gaming and Wagering.

Karie Hobby, Oaklawn's Director of Food and Beverage, said employees are also excited to be back.

"A lot of my staff is walking around, saying this is their favorite day of the year, opening day of the Oaklawn meet," she said.

With day one in the books, the track is quickly looking ahead to the weekend. Oaklawn will host one of its most popular actions, the 50 cent corned beef sandwich.

"You gotta think there's a little cabin fever in Arkansas, and I peaked ahead to the forecast, and I'm looking at 60's and sunny, 50 cent corned beef sandwiches we've got it teed up for a big day," Geiger said.

The 2014 Oaklawn season will run until April 12.
