New Senate Campaign Puts Government Shutdown in the Spotlight

Democratic Senator Mark Pryor hammers his Republican opponent, Tom Cotton, for what his campaign is calling a reckless stance on the shutdown in a new campaign ad.
LITTLE ROCK, AR -- The government shutdown now becoming the focus of the Arkansas Senate race.

Democratic Senator Mark Pryor hammers his Republican opponent, Tom Cotton, for what his campaign is calling a reckless stance on the shutdown in a new campaign ad.

"Cotton and a small group of reckless congressmen took our country to the brink of default. His irresponsible actions weakened our credit and damaged our economy. Fortunately, wiser heads prevailed. Senators like Mark Pryor brought Democrats and Republicans together to end the shutdown and responsibly cut spending."

In response, the Cotton campaign released the following statement:

"This ad is a total fabrication and is just the latest example of Senator Pryor telling Arkansans one thing and doing something completely different in Washington.  Tom Cotton voted five times to fund the government and end the shutdown.  Senator Pryor voted against four separate compromise measures that could have opened the government sooner.  Instead, just like he does 95% of the time, Senator Pryor chose once again to side with President Obama and Harry Reid.

Among the compromise measures that Pryor opposed, one would simply have delayed the individual mandate in Obamacare by one year, giving Arkansas families the same grace period the Administration has already given to big businesses.  We can see pretty clearly now with the debacle the rollout has been that the delay for individuals and families is badly needed.  Yet once again, Senator Pryor chooses partisan politics in Washington over the needs of people in Arkansas."
