New Prison Sought for State

The Arkansas Department of Correction prepares to ask the legislature for funding to build a 1,000-bed facility.
NEWPORT, AR - With prisons at capacity and more state inmates being housed in county jails, there's a proposal for a new prison from the Department of Correction.

Meeting this morning at the Grimes Unit in Newport, the DOC's Board tackled the overcrowding issue.

The panel says the DOC will ask the legislature for $5-6 million just to plan for a new 1,000-bed prison.

The actual construction cost of the facility is estimated at $75-85 million.

The DOC will present its proposal at the upcoming fiscal session of the legislature.
