PINE BLUFF, AR -- A neighbor says he kept a 3-year-old girl warm and safe as police found her father murdered in an apartment a few doors down.

The knock came just before midnight, a knock that not only woke Anthony Johnson up, but also forced him into action.

"My nephew answered the door and said, 'It's a little baby out here,'" Johnson said.

The 3-year-old girl, braving the frigid temperatures, needed help.

"She didn't have on socks, nothing on," Johnson recalled. "She was cold. I kept her warm. I didn't know what was going on."

Johnson called police as he provided socks for the girl and kept her warm.

But he says he'll never forget what she told him.

"All she said was, 'I saw blood,'" Johnson recalled. "That's it...Only thing she told us."

When police arrived, they found the door to the unit opened and found the girl's father, Dametrick McDaniel, lying on the floor in a pool of blood dead.

"I thought someone left her," Johnson said. "I didn't know what went on."

As detectives collected evidence, Johnson says he continued to care for the 3-year-old.

"She went to sleep in my arms," Johnson said. "I guess she was tired or whatever, but I kept her warm."

His only hope was to shield her as much as he could.

"She might not ever remember me, but I know she went to sleep," Johnson said. "Kept her comfortable. That was the main thing to me."

Johnson was simply thankful he could do that much in the midst of such a tragedy.
