Mark Christ speaks about cemetery workshops during October.
The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program is hosting three workshops during the month of October.

The first will be a Children’s Iconography Workshop will be led by author Abby Burnett at Little Rock’s Mount Holly Cemetery. It will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 19 and is open to students in grades five through twelve. It will teach the meaning behind the symbols on gravestones and will feature an icon scavenger hunt. Registration is limited to 30 participants.

The second is a free lecture by veteran gravestone conservator Jonathan Appell of West Hartford, Connecticut, will be
held at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 25, at Curran Hall at 615 East Capitol Street in Little Rock. Appell will address the evolution of gravestone architecture in the U.S., gravestone materials, and repair techniques.

And during the third, Appell will lead a free, hands-on cemetery preservation workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 26, at Oakland and Fraternal Cemetery in Little Rock. The workshop will focus on how to clean, re-set and repair tombstones, as well as instructions on cemetery maintenance, suitable cleaning products and proper techniques to use. Registration for the workshop is limited to the first 40 people to sign up.

To register for the workshops, call (501) 324-9880 or email

The workshops are part of an ongoing effort by the AHPP to work with people around the state who are trying to
preserve cemeteries. One of the biggest problems we face is well-intentioned people who are using inappropriate or
destructive methods when working on historic grave markers.
