Healthy Food, Healthy Living Arkansas Program to Begin Friday

The 3-day program is designed to provide training and information to physicians on how to advise their patients to eat healthier.
PETIT JEAN MOUNTAIN, AR (News release) - The Winthrop Rockefeller Institute will host Healthy Food, Healthy Living Arkansas, a program of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, beginning Friday.

The three-day program, designed to provide training and information to physicians on how to advise their patients to eat healthier, is in its second year. In addition to traditional medical lectures and information sharing, the program utilizes the WRI culinary teaching kitchen, where Executive Chef Robert Hall will engage program participants in preparing healthy meals without sacrificing flavor. Participants will leave the conference with new skills they can use in their own kitchens as well as share with their patients.

“We’ve put together a really unique program that gives physicians a variety of tools to help their patients treat their chronic disease with improved nutrition and lifestyle choices,” said Alecia Hamilton, director of continuing medical education for the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at UAMS. “The expertise that we at UAMS bring to the table combined with the wonderful setting of WRI made for a great experience last year, and we look forward to this program being a success again in 2013.”

New to the program this year is a demonstration by Chef Hall that will expose participants to healthy flavors from around the world. Also added to the lineup are two new sessions: addressing childhood obesity; and health messaging to minority communities.

“We thoroughly enjoyed partnering with UAMS on this program last year, and this year’s program promises to be even better,” said Gary Greene, interim executive director at WRI. “We’re always proud to work alongside fellow members of the University of Arkansas System.”
