Web Extra: Olympic Training, Sort of

You can still go for the gold when it comes to your regular workout.
FAYETTEVILLE, AR (KNWA) - When Neile Jones learned she was going to get to cover the Olympics in Sochi, she decided it was time to make a change in her own life, and train for the games. Sort of. No, she won't be competing for a medal, but in way she is competing against herself.

Today she introduces us to the person who helped her reach her goals and explains what you can do to train like the athlete you want to be when working toward your personal 'gold'. 

Neile says:
For me, the gym has always been a kind of safe haven. A no makeup. No perfume kind of place.

Unfortunately, a few challenges seemed to get in the way of me getting back to the very place I once felt so at home...Not any more, thanks to friend and fitness expert Bruce Williams, "When you came to me you had this goal of Sochi and be in shape for the Olympics."

Together we went to work, focused on a better me in more ways then one as Bruce explains, "For just the average person it comes down to nutrition. It comes down to cardio. It comes down to weight training. Three simple areas. You really need to work hard in all three areas."

When we started, about once a week, the focus was on a type or program known as TRX. This kind of system is used by a lot of athletes who want to work on core strength and conditioning. We integrated that with small group workouts. 

"We are doing more cardio, more weight training intermingled within one workout and the deal is to get your heart rate up burn some calories and build some muscle at the same time, but the right amount of muscle," says Bruce. "We are not trying to do a lot of chest work a lot of shoulder work it's whole body and it's getting that heart rate up the whole time you're working out." 

And Bruce also gave me a program to do on my time, "You know instead of just giving you the fish, I'm going to teach you to fish. I want you to learn how to work out. I want you to understand the intensity. I want you to be safe, but I want you to go and get motivated and do it on your own," he explains. Next he added cardio to my plan which I would do on my own, and last but not least he developed a nutrition plan to follow.

According to Bruce, "Food is so important Neile. I always think food is 70-percent of your results."

And a big part of my lifestyle change. And no I'm not an Olympic athlete but as Bruce explains, we do all have something in common.
