LITTLE ROCK, AR (News release) - This Saturday, May 10, 2014, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) joins forces with the Arkansas Foodbank, United Way, the AARP Foundation and others to help Stamp Out Hunger in Little Rock and throughout Arkansas. Letter carriers will fan out across the nation to pick up donated food on doorsteps and beside mailboxes as they deliver the mail.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held annually on the second Saturday in May, has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive benefitting Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, and its network of food banks. Last year’s drive brought in 74 million pounds of food and provided assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table.

Food collected during the drive in Little Rock and North Little Rock will be delivered to the Arkansas Foodbank, where it will be sorted and catalogued by an army of volunteers. Then it will be distributed to local hunger relief agencies and food pantries to help the hungry, as well as areas devastated by the recent tornado outbreak in Central Arkansas.

To participate in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 10. Please do not donate any glass items or opened items.

The AARP Foundation has sent out approximately 240,000 red plastic Drive to End Hunger bags to the Little Rock metro area. Residents who receive the bag can put their non-perishable food items in there to be collected or use a bag of their own. Letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail. If you live in an apartment complex or any area that uses a cluster of mailboxes, leave your food items by the base of the mailboxes.
