Responding to Winter Weather, Mt. St. Mary Academy Tries "Cyber Days"

As public schools file waivers to make up for lost days due to winter weather, one private school in Little Rock is utilizing a high-tech solution.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - As public schools file waivers to make up for lost days due to winter weather, one private school in Little Rock is utilizing a high-tech solution.

Schools across Arkansas have seen anywhere from a few days to 23 days missed in West Fork Public Schools due to winter weather this season.

At the private school Mt. St. Mary Academy in Little Rock, students have missed four days this winter due to weather.

Director of Communications Sarah Johnson says a winter weather storm in December provided enough warning for faculty to place lesson plans online and allow students to complete coursework at home.

The "cyber days" strategy effectively allowed the school to stay in operation during a winter storm.

But Johnson says the more recent March storm came on quicker, not allowing the campus to utilize the pilot program again.

And the program is contingent on technology and connectivity.

"That's one of the disadvantages we're still exploring is that it does require students to have access to the internet and their power," Johnson says. "Electricity isn't a guarantee in a winter storm."

The Arkansas Department of Education said Monday that 75 districts across the state have missed at least ten days of instruction this school year due to inclement weather.

ADE commissioner Tom Kimbrell it's one of the most challenging weather seasons he's seen.

"This year is a lot worse, we had more events stretched over larger section of the state," Kimbrell says.

Public schools can file for waivers for any days beyond the initial ten missed.

"Districts have a mandatory spring break built in, but they can work through that, plus five inclement weather days they can use to make up the first ten days," Kimbrell says.

The State Board of Education will consider each waiver request at a meeting on March 20th, Kimbrell says on "a case by case basis."
