Pink Courage: Komen Ozark Fighting Breast Cancer Year-Round

This year the organization made it public that folks could make donations to those raising funds for the Race for the Cure through the month of June.
NORTHWEST ARKANSAS (KNWA) - Every year thousands lace up for the Komen Ozark Race for the Cure, but what many don't realize long after the run comes to an end, the marathon in the fight against breast cancer is just beginning.

"The race is so important to the work that we do, but we are much more than the race and we have several exciting fundraisers coming up to help us so we we can fund more services to women in the next year," says Mary Alfrey, executive director of the Komen Ozark affiliate.

This year the organization made it public that folks could make donations to those raising funds for the Race for the Cure through the month of June, but now the focus is on what's next.

"We have a new event coming up called football 101 for ladies. It will be on Thursday, July 31 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with Coach Bielema. He's so passionate about the cause," Alfrey says.

University of Arkansas Head Football Coach Bret Bielema, whose mother has survived breast cancer more than once, has been involved with Komen for years. Coach Bielema will share his own story and also share more about the University of Arkansas and its facilities.

"We will start with a reception in the complex and then we are going to divide into three groups and everyone will get to see everything behind the scenes we'll go into the local room, to the meeting room and coach will teach us about football and then we'll see the training room and then well end up in the indoor facility," says Alfrey.

Knowing the fight against breast cancer is a daily battle, this group will have even more events coming up down the road. So if you can't make this one, watch for the next one and know your donations, time and support could help save a life.

The organization's Pink Ribbon Luncheon is set for Sept. 25.
