Native Arkansan, Broadway Star Lawrence Hamilton Dies

Reports say the 59-year-old from Foreman and Henderson State University grad, died Thursday from a gastrointestinal blood clot.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - An Arkansan who rose to fame as a performer on Broadway has died.

Lawrence Hamilton, a native of Foreman and a 1976 graduate of Henderson State University, was 59.

Reports say he died of a gastrointestinal blood clot during surgery at a New York City hospital on Thursday.

Hamilton had been inducted into the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 2003.

According to his bio on the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame website, he had served as musical director for opera star Jessye Norman, performed at the White House, for Pope Paul II at the Vatican, and in concert with the legendary Lena Horne. At the Arkansas Repertory Theatre he appeared as Whining Boy in “The Piano Lesson,” created Souvenir (an evening of song featuring the works of Randy Goodrum) and directed the 2006 production of “Crowns.” 

According to his Facebook page, Hamilton was currently with the Broadway Theatre and I Dream A World Youth Arts Summer Camp.

His last timeline post from March 24 read:
"The end of a very inspiring run of "The Piano Lesson", Cape Fear Regional Theatre, NC."

The governor's office tweeted about Hamilton's death this morning:
"We are all saddened by the loss of Arkansas Broadway star Lawrence Hamilton. He was a good friend to the Beebes for many years."

There's no word yet on funeral arrangements.
