LR Firefighters Push For Female Recruits

The Little Rock Fire Department is on a hiring push hoping to bring in more women.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Little Rock Fire Department is on a hiring push hoping to bring in more women.

We Spoke to three of the city's female firefighters who say it's an honor to be called a fireman.

The fire chief is hoping more women will sign up so the department will more closely resemble the makeup of the city.

The women say it's a hard job but worth it.

"You're going to see a lot of things you've never seen in your life, you're going to see death and destruction and trauma then there is stuff, people will thank you and hug you and you may get to deliver a baby," says female firefighter Jennifer Winchell.

Of 415 firefighters in Little Rock 15 are women. Female candidates have to carry the same amount of gear and meet the same physical standards as their male counterparts.

Women also say interested applicants should bring their determination and thick skin.
