"Vickie and I are proud to announce my candidacy for First Congressional District," said Heber Springs Mayor Jackie McPherson.
He touted his ability to bring results as mayor as a glimpse into his possible leadership as a member of Congress.
"I bring work ethic and ability to bring people together, and as mayor, being able to bring common ground and bring our community forward. I'll take that same attitude and approach to Washington," he said.
Talk Business Blogger Michael Cook said Democrats are highlighting candidates whom the average Arkansan can relate to, but they also have experience of working across party lines.
Republicans, thought, still have the edge -- successfully linking Democrats to President Barack Obama and his policies.
"I think what we're seeing in Arkansas is now a competitive two-party state where both parties have to give a clear message of why they think their candidate should win," Cook said.
McPherson is aware of the hard campaign ahead of him, especially since he's running against an incumbent. He said he has to hit the ground running.
"I think when the people of the First District find out what I'm about, they'll rally behind me," McPherson said.
