Independence Co. Jail Inmates Buy Own Ankle Monitors

Only those with misdemeanor charges qualify for the program, which frees up space in the jail.
INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, AR - Inmates are sporting new jewelry these days and paying for it out of their own pockets.

Independence County Sheriff Steve Jeffrey says a total of 21 inmates with misdemeanor charges have been released with ankle bracelets, which will help free up some space at the jail.

The jail capacity is about 120 but it’s been holding up to 150 inmates.

The cost for those approved to use this method is nine dollars a day, which again, will come out of the inmates' wallets.

They have to pay two weeks up-front before they’re released.
