Highway Dept. Presents Study to the Public for I-30 Improvements

One of those improvements could be adding more lanes, going from six to possibly 10.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - Trucks. Cars. Big rigs. About 114,000 cars travel this stretch of I-30 every single day.

But the Arkansas State Highway projects by 2040, 157,000 will drive on it daily.

"You might be all the way in the slow lane and going into the fast lane, you know, if you've got to be in the fast lane to get to where you've got to go you're not going to make it."

One of those drivers could be Hunter Berry.

He drives into Little Rock every day from Bryant to sell fruits and vegetables to local farmers.

He wants to see more lanes.

"I think the five lanes will be good, but at the same time with the roadways and the road crews they need to have a little more pep in their step is what I'm saying," says Berry.

He says it's frustrating to drive on the freeway because of unnecessary traffic.

"Going towards Memphis it gets backed up, you could be sitting their 45 minutes to an hour just in one spot and I mean people they'll get out of their vehicles and they'll walk around to stretch their legs while they're sitting there," says Berry.

AHTD says it wants to fix up I-30 because it's the most traveled corridor in the state.

"But it also has some issues. There are some structural issues with that bridge and we need to do something with that. Do we need to fix what's already there, widen what's already there or do we need to build a new bridge in its place?" says Randy Ort with the AHTD.

It also wants to see how many lanes the interstate can fit to accommodate growing traffic.

So far the state has $300 million to go toward this construction.

It will make a list of what it wants done to the corridors then take it to companies to see what the state can afford.

But it won't do any of this without hearing from the public first.

"Instead of going out there and telling them what we're going to do, we want the public to be involved in determining what we're going to do," says Ort.

Hunter wants the interstate widened, not torn down.

"They're going to have to take their time with the bridge, but it shouldn't take six years just to go across one bridge," says Ort.

But in this, the most speedy way.
