CSA Finalist: Sharon Napier

Booneville woman has committed her life to abused or neglected children.
A Logan County woman is up for a KARK 4 Community Service Award.

She is Sharon Napier, who lives in Booneville.

"CASA provides us volunteers, or advocates, that have opportunity to go into those homes of those parents that live there and come back and tell the judge what we saw," Napier explains of the Appointed Special Advocates program for which she volunteers.

"The average person out there does not know about the abuse and neglect we see, and I remember when we started the program in Logan County that I had someone say that, "Well, we don't have any abused kids in Logan County," says Judge Terry Sullivan, Circuit/Juvenile Judge with the 15th Judicial District.

"It's the real world, and you come to realize that things do happen to children because they are raised in homes where they've been raised for generations that way," Napier says.

Napier willingly gave up her career to care for her parents in their final years, and when her husband of 45 years died suddenly last spring, Court Appointed Special Advocates of the Tri-Peaks became the center of her life.

"Sharon has so much heart and so much goodness in her, I think the families that we work with respond to that very, very well," says Pat Stengel, CASA's Executive Director.

Napier also shares her talents with her church as a soloist in the choir, and works with the children's ministry.

"She is such a wonderful blessing in our nursing home," says Pastor Geral Holloway with Booneville First United Methodist Ministry. "She does hair at the nursing home, she goes out and leads worship at the nursing home many times for us, and she goes and gets the patients and brings them to church."

"She's one of those people that will never turn you down. No matter how long it takes, she won't turn you down. She's gonna do it for you," says Booneville Mayor Jerry Wilkins.

"She's been here three years, which is a relatively short time, but she's served over 28 kids. Now that's really amazing!," says Judge Sullivan.

"I really think CASA and working with my friend Jackie has made my life so much richer," Napier says.

Napier is a dedicated advocate for children in difficult circumstances at home, and is our October finalist for a 2012 Community Service Award presented by KARK 4, the D.H.S. Division of Community Service and Non-Profit Support, the Office of the Governor and the Duncan Firm.
