NEAR MORRILTON, AR - With the government shutdown closing national parks, state parks are an option for Arkansans eager to get outdoors and enjoy the Fall weather.

One of them is Petit Jean State Park in Conway County, west of Morrilton. It's located atop Petit Jean Mountain on the Arkansas River between the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains.

Inside the park, you'll find Cedar Falls, which cascades 95 feet to the floor of Cedar Creek Canyon.

The trail leading down to Cedar Falls begins behind the breezeway at Mather Lodge, a rustic style mountain lodge, and winds down into Cedar Creek Canyon. Massive stone boulders and large trees adorn the trailside.

The first half mile descends more than 200 feet down steps cut from rock more than 60 years ago. The trail follows Cedar Creek another half mile to the bottom of Cedar Falls.

The park website advises "Only those in good shape should attempt this walk. The park staff recommends wearing shoes or boots that provide ankle support and a firm grip."
