2nd National Guardsman Suspended in Controversy Over NLR Casket Picture

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR -- We learned Wednesday that another member of the Wisconsin National Guard has been suspended in the controversy over a picture taken at Camp Robinson in North Little Rock.

"We encourage our members to use social media," said Matt Sneed with the Arkansas National Guard, noting that social media is an important tool.

"The fact is that's where people are today, so that's where we have to be to communicate with our force and to the public," Sneed said.

But Sneed admits social media can be a double-edged sword.

While at this time no guardsmen from the Natural State have been directly connected to the picture, the Arkansas National Guard is using the firestorm that it's caused as a lesson.

"We just want all of our members to be mindful when using social media, just like any form of communication, they're representing something bigger than themselves," Sneed said.

The attached picture was taken by members of the funeral honors team from various state national guards during training earlier this year at Camp Robinson.  The caption reads, in part, "we put the FUN in funeral."

"People are impulsive sometimes instead of thinking through the ramifications of what they might want to communicate," said Howard Turney is a social worker and processor at UALR who's familiar with the trouble social media can lead to. "We don't know the exponential effects of words that we put out into cyber space."

Military officials say Terry Harrison from the Wisconsin National Guard has been suspended pending an investigation into the picture, which was posted to her social media account.

She's also in hot water for another picture and insensitive comments from an actual military funeral.

Military officials say the second national guardsman suspended made comments on social media defending Harrison.
