177 Marriage Licenses Processed in Pulaski County; 150+ Same-Sex Couples Marry

Hundreds of same-sex couples filled the courthouse applying for and having an officiate sign off on marriage licenses.
LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Pulaski County Clerk's Office processed 177 marriage license applications Monday. Only a handful of that total number were of the "bride and groom" type.

The rest were same-sex couples beginning the process to get married.

Monday morning Lisa Boehm is on her way to getting a new last name.

She married her partner Debbie Evans in the rotunda of the Pulaski County Courthouse after applying for a marriage license.

They said it was "long overdue." The couple has waited two years.

They're just one of many same-sex couples now able to apply for a gender neutral marriage license that the County Clerk's Office had ready by 7:30 a.m. for the first time ever.

It was just in time, County Clerk Larry Crane explains, as hundreds of same-sex couples filled the courthouse applying for and having an officiate sign off on marriage licenses.

Crane says Monday will be their busiest day ever.

Last week, for example, his office certified 80 marriages and that was considered a heavy load.

Of the 177 marriage licenses applied for, Crain's office certified more than 150 after the couple married in the rotunda.

It's an emotional day for the couples and even for the Clerk that approved applications.

"I've choked up," admitted Crane. "This is a very big day for a lot of my friends and for people that I care about."

Crane has worked to make sure it was as seamless as possible, even still for those bride and grooms out there.

"The only thing there is, is that we have to tell people to make sure that we get the right forms for each couple," explained Crain.

Because, opinions aside, same-sex marriage is something that will take getting used to, not only for his office and others in the state but also those who's lives and names are changing with an "I do."
