CSA Finalist: Weyerhauser

Company's Hot Springs division is up for a small corporate humanitarian award.
The 35th Annual KARK Community Service Awards are coming up in July.

One of the corporate finalists is a division of one of the nation's largest forest products
companies.

The Hot Springs sales office of the giant Weyerhauser is a well-known corporate citizen.

"Well, in this area last year this group put in over 10-thousand hours of community participation.
That 10-thousand translated into over a 190-thousand dollars last year," says Rhonda Hunter, V.P. of Southern Timberlands.

Weyerhauser teams and corporate sponsorships support dozens of community and fundraising projects. including United Way, Habitat for Humanity, the Documentary Film Festival, Pack-a-Backpack, the Cancer Society's Relay for Life and the new Bark for Life event.

"It can be a committee event or it can be a team event. Weyerhaeuser picked it up as a team event last year. Overall last year their team raised over 12-thousand dollars, and they do a corporate sponsorship for us every year," says Donna Kay Smith, with the American Cancer Society of Garland County.

Project Hope Food Bank serves some 40 agencies and is not affiliated with the Arkansas Foodbank Network.

"We've been around about three years now, this is our third year, and they've been with us since
2010 and have supported us with money donations, which is a huge help to us, because we basically have to go out and purchase food to be able to get food to the agencies. The company supports all facets of volunteerism throughout the entire country. It really is a general encompassing belief that begins right at the top of the company, and it always has for over a hundred years," says Ted Thompson, Executive Director of Project Hope Food Bank.

"We are very excited. This is going to be the home for a women's and children's homeless shelter.
They gave us a 3-thousand dollar grant this year and of course we'll apply again next year, and
Weyerhaeuser's gonna support us by helping us with renovations. They're gonna sponsor a room at the shelter which will be a bunk room," says Gary Everett, Lumber Sales Manager.

"In this office we certainly are at 100-percent, absolutely. We have many different activities that
go on throughout the year and everyone gets a chance to participate in at least one of the
activities. We always set our goals higher every year," says Kim Qualls, Executive Director of Safe Haven Homeless Shelter.

Weyerhauser is a small corporate humanitarian award finalist.
