JONESBORO, AR - Markel Owens, respected Arkansas State University football player, was remembered during a memorial on campus in Jonesboro Tuesday.

About 100 faculty, staff, students and football players celebrated the life of the 20-year-old who is being hailed a hero after he was shot to death protecting his mother in a home invasion robbery last week.

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe sent a letter referencing the fearlessness and leadership of Owens.

That was one of several moving tributes played out in ASU's Centennial Hall. His teammates spoke of his unselfish attitude, while coaches spoke of his lack of ego.

Owens' football jersey was encased and will be displayed on campus. A sign Markel Owens will not soon be forgotten at his alma mater.
