Boy with Autism, Heart Problems Scores 1st Touchdown

A 50-yard touchdown run meant more than just six points for one Gravette eighth grader.
GRAVETTE, AR -- A 50-yard touchdown run meant more than just six points for one Gravette eighth grader.

Ethan Spear, who is autistic and suffers from heart problems, took a handoff against Prairie Grove all the way to the end zone last week, scoring his first touchdown.

After coaches cleared the idea with his parents, Ethan still had one reservation.

"When I told him we were going to put him in the ballgame, his response was to me, he said, 'Coach I can't protect myself,'" Gravette Football Coach Duke Mobley says. "We said, 'Ethan, you don't have to worry about it because we're going to protect you.'"

Ethan's mom, Michelle, says she hopes people see this and realize anything is possible, no matter what disabilities or restrictions someone might face.
