LITTLE ROCK, AR -- A group of bicyclists on a cross-country trip has decided to head home after an accident earlier this week left one cyclist dead, and several others hurt.

It happened on Highway 17 near McCrory in Woodruff County on Tuesday. Seven riders were hospitalized. One of the riders, 18-year-old Merrit Levitan of Massachusetts, was pronounced dead on Thursday.

Levitan was one of 13 young bicyclists traveling from South Carolina to California through an organization called Overland. The group's director, Tom Costley, says the injured cyclists are getting a lot of support this week.

"We need the community to extend their thoughts and prayers to all of the injured and then their families as well," Costley said.

Arkansas State Police continue to investigate the crash. There is no word yet whether charges will be filed against the driver, Teagan Martin, 21, of Newport.
