Benton PD: Woman Accidentally Shot in Neck, Investigation Under Way

Detectives took over investigation after officers found evidence of the shooting in an apartment, then contacted the 19-year-old victim at the hospital.
BENTON, AR -- Police are investigating after a 19-year-old woman was hospitalized after a shooting Tuesday evening.

The Benton Police Department (BPD) says officers responded to a report of shots fired at Fountain Lake Apartments around 6:45 Tuesday evening, where they discovered that a shooting victim had already been taken to the hospital.

Detectives took over the investigation after officers found evidence of the shooting in an apartment, then contacted the 19-year-old victim at the hospital.

BPD says initial investigation indicates that a 21-year-old person was handling a firearm when it discharged accidentally.

The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the neck area, but BPD says they don't believe her injuries are life-threatening.
