Benton Co. Jail Offering GED Class to Inmates

Volunteer teachers from Northwest Arkansas Community College are teaching the GED program, which filled up in its first week.
BENTON COUNTY, AR -- The Benton County Sheriff's Office is now offering inmates a chance to get an education while serving time.

Volunteer teachers from Northwest Arkansas Community College are teaching the GED program, which filled up in its first week.

The jail is starting with the female population to work out logistics on how to expand it to the much larger group of male prisoners.

"Inmates that earn their GED or earn their diplomas are less likely to return to jail, the statistics in prison show that," says BCSO Deputy Keshia Guy. "And that's one or the reasons we wanted to do it."

Teachers say the 15 inmates are starting with a test to evaluate what they already know, but they still aren't sure how the final test will be administered.
