1st Round of Hypothetical 64-Team College Playoff Pits A-State vs. Auburn

Under only a few guidelines, writers from USA Today constructed a hypothetical bracket comprised of four regions, each with 16 teams.
LITTLE ROCK, AR -- With college bowl season kicking off next Saturday, many of the same yearly questions and debates have arisen about who deserves to be in the national championship game and who doesn't.

Sports writers at USA Today thought outside of the box and imagined what the world would be like with a 64-team tournament bracket similar to NCAA's March Madness.

Under only a few guidelines, the writers, acknowledging all along that this was merely a dream scenario, constructed a bracket comprised of four regions, each with 16 teams.

After constructing the bracket, the writers have Arkansas State facing off against former coach Gus Malzahn and the Auburn Tigers in the first round.

The hypothetical bracket features 10 teams from the Southeastern Conference (SEC), including:
  • Alabama
  • Auburn
  • Georgia
  • LSU
  • Mississippi
  • Mississippi State
  • Missouri
  • South Carolina
  • Texas A&M
  • Vanderbilt
