MONTICELLO, AR - A flatbed trailer became unhitched Wednesday and plowed into the old Monticello library on S. Main Street.
Luckily, no one was hurt, but Shirley Smith was in the building and says she had no idea what had happened at the time.
"It shook the building kind of like an earthquake shake. Then it was a loud boom," says Smith.
Currently, half of the building is being used as the public defender's office. The part that was hit was vacant. But the damage can still be seen.
Trailer salesman Dale Mckiever says many accidents are caused by a lack of safety chains.
"Always make sure your latches are latched. Make sure your pins are in there and your safety chains are in use. Those safety chains are good quality and that is what they are there for," says Mckiever.
According to the Drew County Sheriff's Office, this trailer did not have safety chains.
Mckiever says a lot of old trailers do not have the chains and that it is imperative to have them.
