Passenger Killed When Truck Loses Brakes, Swerves off Little Rock Street

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A passenger has died while riding in a pickup truck that lost its brakes and collided with a metal pole.

It happened on the city's southwest side shortly after 2 on Monday afternoon at the intersection of Chicot Rd. and Mabelvale Cutoff Road.

Police say they have so far been unable to identify the victim, a man believed to be 19-20 years old. He died at the scene and his body had to be removed from the truck with extracation equipment. The accident report noted he was not wearing a seat belt.

John Fore, 34, of Little Rock, is identified as the driver of the 1984 Chevrolet Silverado that was pulling a trailer loaded with tree limbs when he had to swerve off Chicot Rd. to avoid other vehicles in the intersection. He told police he pushed the brakes to the floor before swerving to the left trying to avoid a collision. Fore was treated for a leg injury and released.

The driver of a 2002 Ford Ranger pickup truck called police after the accident to report his vehicle had been hit in the accident. Bobby Cates, 50, of Little Rock, told officers he saw something pass in front of him after he had the green light, then felt a collision. Cates said he was scared to remain at the scene because he had a suspended license and active arrest warrants but called police after he got home. Cates was arrested and taken to jail. He was cited for careless prohibited driving. Cates was arrested on the outstanding warrants as well as being cited for driving on a suspended license and no proof of insurance. The jail record for Cates noted only a contempt of court charge.
