Winston-Salem, NC -- Thousands gathered today to pay tribute to the life and legacy of famed poet and Arkansas native Maya Angelou.
The legendary writer passed away May 28th.
A memorial service was held today in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to honor her achievements.
Loved ones, admirers, friends and celebrities gathered to share stories about the power and beauty of Angelou's poetry.
First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey were among those who shared how Angelou's works impacted their lives.
Former President Bill Clinton and actress Cicely Tyson also paid tribute to Angelou.
Flags at the capitol flew half staff today in her honor.
