BENTON, AR - There's a new K-9 officer walking the beat for the Benton Police Department (BNPD).

Ares is an 18-month-old Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix.

His name was chosen from over 80 entries submitted by a group of local 6th graders who were asked by the BNPD to be in on the process of choosing what to call him.

A committee of department employees then sorted through the entries and decided the name Ares was the best fit. The name was submitted by Emilee Faith Millerd. Her entry stated: "I think the dog's name should be Ares because in Greek mythology, Ares is the god of war and to a K-9 dog, it would mean to me, the power to fight for our state or country or even our city/town. It would mean so much to me if the dog's name is Ares."

Ares is assigned to Officer Hunter Begoon in the patrol division.

He is a dual purpose K-9 trained in narcotic detection and criminal apprehension.

Officer Begoon and Ares both recently completed their certifications at the Little Rock K-9 Academy.

Ares is also certified through the National Narcotic Dog Detector Association (NNDDA), a professional, nonprofit organization dedicated to the utilization and proficiency of scent detector dogs for the benefit of law enforcement.
