National Organization Backs Sheridan High School Student

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Human Rights Campaign held a rally for a Sheridan High School student Tuesday.

Last week Taylor Ellis' story hit the airwaves. Since then it has been a trending topic not only in the Natural State but all over the world wide web.  Taylor is an openly gay 17 year old, and said he had a Sheridan High yearbook profile piece pulled from publication.

In an effort to get the piece back in the yearbook the Human Rights Campaign got involved.

Dozens showed up Tuesday on the steps of the Arkansas Capital building, clapping and cheering for Taylor.

He said, "I was overwhelmed because I didn't see any of this coming, honestly."

From the podium Taylor talked about having the profile pulled from the yearbook.

"It's not something I'm ashamed of, in fact I'm proud of who I am, that's why I  can't understand why my school is trying to force me back into the closet."

Arkansas native and Human Rights Campaign President, Chad Griffin said, "In this case the principal and the superintendent are the bullies."

Also Tuesday for the first time since the story broke, Sheridan Superintendent Dr. Brenda Haynes issued a statement.

It said in part, "We must make decisions that lead in the proper direction for all of our students and for our community."

"The seven profiles will not be published in the yearbook."

Griffin believes all the profiles were pulled because of Taylor, "They took all seven out, because of one student.  Who does that?  It's outrageous that an adult who's charged with protecting those students would do that."

Taylor said things are going to change, "Win or lose, there's going to be people that are upset, which I don't want that.  I want everyone to be happy in the end, but that's not how its going to be."

If the Sheridan schools do not put the profile piece back in the yearbook, Griffin is hoping Governor Mike Beebe gets involved.

Messages to Dr. Haynes, asking for further comments, were not returned.
