Fugitive 'Nurse' from Arkansas Arrested in Missouri

LITTLE ROCK, AR (News release) A woman formerly from Pleasant Plains (Independence County) who authorities say falsely claimed to be a nurse has been arrested in Missouri.

Susan Elaine Boyce, 59, was taken into custody Wednesday night in Howell County, Missouri by Social Security Administration - Office of the Inspector General agents and deputies from the Howell County Sheriff’s Office.

Court officials say Boyce was found after investigators got a lead in the case from the Office of the Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“I want to commend the agents from the Social Security and the Department of Health and Human Services Administration – Offices of the Inspector General for continuing to develop and pursue leads in this investigation resulting in the apprehension of Ms. Boyce,” said Christopher R. Thyer, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas. “We could not rest knowing she might try to pose as a nurse in some other town to get another healthcare-related position in a school or other facility. The health and safety of anyone who would have trusted she was a qualified healthcare provider was at risk. Thankfully, people no longer have to worry now that she is in custody.”

Boyce was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 5, 2012. The seven-count indictment charged her with wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and misuse of a Social Security Number. Boyce used an Arkansas State Board of Nursing license number and a Social Security Number belonging to another person to obtain employment as a school nurse in Searcy from the 2007-2008 school year through the 2011-2012 school year.

Boyce pleaded not guilty in an appearance this afternoon before a U.S. Magistrate.  She is in federal custody and will remain so until her attorney requests a detention hearing.  Her trial was set for March 3.
