NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR - Thousands of students headed back to school this morning. For North Little Rock's Meadow Park Elementary, it was also opening day for the new campus.

It's the first new school house for the North Little Rock School District (NLRSD) in more than 40 years.

"This is the first one. The first school in 45 years that North Little Rock has opened brand new," says Dr. Beth Stewart, deputy superintendent.

Meadow Park Elementary is part of a $265 million master plan to renovate, remodel, or rebuild every school in the district.

Even from the toughest of critics, the new school is getting rave reviews.

"I like the way we have a lot of space, and how you can have a great view," says student Rayshawn Brown.

"It's big," adds student David Ham.

Putting the size aside, the building is also on the cutting edge of learning technologies.

"So, we can't just teach our students one platform, they have to have knowledge of a lot of different platforms. They have to have knowledge of a lot of different things in order to be ready for their future," explains Dr. Stewart.

That's why every classroom has a touch screen LCD smart board.

Students will also have access to iPads while in class.

"So, we wanna make sure that we are preparing them for that career. In order to do that, our students have to know all the different technologies," Dr. Stewart says.

But it's not all about new ways to teach the ABC's, Meadow Park is also targeting student safety.

"If something terrible were to happen, God forbid, we still can lockdown each individual hallway to keep our students safe," Dr. Stewart explains.

Each hallway and each grade level is protected by locking doors.

It's a brand new school protecting children, while teaching on the forefront of technology.
