New Development Plans for Downtown Conway

- CONWAY, AR -- Conway city leaders are expanding revitalization efforts in the downtown area.

They're going past the "main drag" in the city and working to give a nearby street a name of its own too.

Much of the attention over the years has been on Main and Oak streets, these are now very popular areas with shops and restaurants.

But the city wants to expand development south of there too, focusing on Markham Street.

There are already some businesses in the area, but it's not very pedestrian-friendly. There are no sidewalks or bike lanes.

Photos put up at the Conway Chamber of Commerce show how that will likely change in the next couple of years.

There's a proposal to put in a park and amphitheater, bike lanes, on-street parking, sidewalks and trees.

Grant money paid for the design strategy, now the city wants to work on bringing the images to life.

Community Development Manager Scott Grummer said, "We've had great turnouts at our public meetings. Everybody is excited to see the future of what Markham Street can be. So we're extremely excited. "

The city will get help with this revitalization project through state and federal grants.

Private investors will be a big part of the process too, by helping to bring in new businesses.

The next step is showing the plans to Conway City Council, which should happen in September.

Once the designs are approved, work on a new and improved Markham St. can begin in Conway.
