UPDATE:Cause of Death Released for Jefferson County Man Found in Pond

The Jefferson county Sheriff's office has officially named drowning as the cause of death for Shawn Miller.

The Sheriff's office released this statement late Thursday evening.

“The reason why our investigators began this investigation as a homicide investigation is that we understand that the determination of a drowning as a cause of death for a body that is found in water is imperative in forensic investigation because becoming submerged in water may be a secondary rather than primary event,” said Major Lafayette Woods, Jr., spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Our office is waiting on other relevant reports from the medical examiner.  Until we obtain those reports and conclude our investigation, the investigation will remain on-going.”

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. - A possible homicide is under investigation after a man's body is found in a pond near his home.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says the body of Shawn Miller, 29, was found Tuesday morning about 20 yards from his house in the 3200 block of Wheeler Chapel Road.

“While speaking with family members, none knew of anyone that would want to harm Miller. There is reason to treat this as a homicide investigation in lieu of a traditional death investigation. However, I am not at liberty to disclose those details at this stage of the investigation,” said Major Lafayette Woods, Jr., spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. “There are certainly more questions than answers right now, but with the help of our state’s medical examiner, our team of investigators are up for the task of determining the cause and manner in which Mr. Miller died.”

Investigators spent the morning and early afternoon combing Miller's property for clues that could be used to assist them in better determining what happened to him.
Although there were no immediate signs of visible injuries, investigators aren’t ruling anything out until they’re able to determine a cause and manner of death.
