Students Plan Mass Walkout to Call for Better Gun Control

LITTLE ROCK, Ark -- It was the terrifying scene that had the eyes of the nation glued to their TVs.

On Valentine's Day, a gunman killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Now, a month later, students across the nation, like Madeline Carver, are preparing for an organized walkout Wednesday, aimed at pushing for tougher gun laws.

"When I saw that my heart broke," said Carver. "I feel mixed emotions ... nervous, excited, also sad."

She said with the recent school threats across the country, attending Robinson Middle School in Pulaski County hasn't been easy.

"I'm very concerned about my safety at school when I leave the house," said Carver.

Carver's good friend, Olivia O'Quinn feels the same way.

"I'm scared, basically, everyday I go to school just because of this," said O'Quinn.

The 8th graders plan to walk to the flag pole in front of their school, carrying a poster with names of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting victims' listed on it.

They pray lawmakers see their message.

"I hope it inspires them to take action in all just because there are people who want to, but they don't have enough motivation to do it," said Carver.

School administrators said those who walk out will be counted as absent.

"Us as students, we are the next thing and we will need to know what will be going on in the nation first before we can actually act upon stuff," said Carver.

Concerned about safety during the walkout, Robinson Middle and High School administrators are offering students an alternative.

Students are being encouraged to wear gray, donate to a collection for the victims and/or write a letter to state lawmakers.

Carver hopes whatever happens - one major thing changes.

"I feel like most of the students here.. our voices aren't being heard," said Carver.

School administrators said there will be security keeping a close eye on the students who choose to walkout.
