Searcy Community Center Shooting Ends in Arrests

SEARCY, Ark. - A shooting at a community center lands two men in jail in Searcy.

Amy Gibson and two of her children come to the Carmichael playground a couple times a week.

"It's a really nice community and there's a lot of really nice people here," she said.

But it wasn't a surprise for her to learn of the shooting taking place in the Carmichael parking lot just a day before.

"It's just a crazy world we're living in nowadays," she said.

Tuesday, around 6 p.m., Searcy Police were called out to the Community Center parking lot after 21-year old Jaquan Hollister shot two rounds at 22-year old Corey Whitmore, but missed.

"That could have gone a lot worse," Searcy Police Officer Terri Lee said.

With the police station just 5 blocks away, the response was fast and Hollister was arrested for aggravated assault.

But Whitmore, who was shot at by Hollister, ran from police.

The center was placed on lock-down.

"When officers caught up to [Whitmore] they placed him under arrest for fleeing and he also had a warrant that was unrelated," Officer Lee said.

According to the police report, Whitmore had a warrant for his arrest for misdemeanor Failure to Appear.

"Out of a horrible incident, best case scenario, nobody was injured. That's all we can ask for," Lee said.

While Gibson and her family  live nearby and are glad arrests were made, she has her own "piece" of mind.

"I personally am not going to let that stuff scare me because I have self protection and I know how to use it."

Hollister's bond has not yet been set.
