Scammers Demand Thousands in White Co.

SEARCY, Ark. - A would-be scam victim has saved themselves thousands of dollars by threatening to make a call to law enforcement.

The White County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) says it's one of several reports the agency has received about scammers offering to put down gravel in personal driveways.

The WCSO says the individuals drive trucks that have amber lights in the front and appear to be with the highway department. They claim to have leftover chip seal gravel from construction sites on the highway and offer to lay it on driveways for $15 a yard.

Deputies say the con artists have a full dump truck load and an additional truck with more gravel in it. The vehicles are marked "Chip Seal Maintenance" and are orange with a white Arkansas Highway Department symbol on the sides of the doors.

After the scammers laid down a large area of gravel at one home, they went inside and demanded $7,400 for the work. The WCSO says they never presented any credentials or written agreement for that amount and when asked about it they became agitated and reduced their fee to $6,000. When the property owner told the scammers they were going to call the Sheriff's Office, the scammers told them they didn't owe them anything and left.

The WCSO says the Arkansas State Highway Department does not do work on personal/private property. In making the public aware of the scam, the Sheriff's Office says to be cautious and verify credentials. If you are approached by these individuals or have any questions, call the White County Sheriff's Office (501) 279-6279.
