Razorback Hockey Team Heading to National Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Fox 24) - The Razorback hockey team hopes to bring back some hardware from the National Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

"Here in Arkansas, people don't know. Most of them joke, Arkansas has a hockey team?" says Sky Chambers, an assistant captain for the University of Arkansas hockey team.

The men's hockey team has put in the work to make it to the next level.

"It is growing at a pretty rapid rate. More and more people know about it every day, especially now with the recognition we're getting going to nationals," adds Matt Tallo, another assistant captain.

The club team is 100 percent student funded.

"They come in every day, work hard, pay to be here, they are serious about it and that's why we've been successful," Chambers continues.

"We're ready to go, we're ready for Sunday to get here, to get on that bus and go to Columbus," Tallo says.

The captains admit, it may be tough to overcome football's popularity. But they can already see the sport catching on.

"Just around campus, people are starting to know who we are, what we do, where we do it and how we do it," says Tallo.

"Hockey is fast-paced, you are on tiny blades trying to hit the same way. It's really hard," Chambers says.

Team captain Andrew Denome says their first game will be against Florida Gulf Coast University on Tuesday. Next, they'll take on Fairfield University on Wednesday and Hope College on Thursday.
