President Trump Approval Rating High in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Many Arkansans are showing signs they like the way President Donald Trump is running the White House.

The 2017 Arkansas Poll gives President Trump the highest approval rating for a U.S. president in the last 12 years. The poll's numbers date back to 2005 during the administration of President George W. Bush.

President Trump's approval rating comes in at 47 percent. The next closet rating is 42 percent for President Barack Obama back in 2009. Obama also has the lowest approval number in the poll at 27 percent in 2013 and 2014.

Note: Left column is approve, middle column is disapprove and right column is don't know.

The poll's public figure approval ratings for Arkansas governor date back to 1999. In recent years, Gov. Asa Hutchinson's approval rating has grown from 57 percent in 2015 to 62 percent this year. To compare, Hutchinson's predecessor, Gov. Mike Beebe, had approval ratings in the 70 percent range throughout his time in office.

In addition to thoughts on government leaders, the poll asked Arkansas voters their opinions on everything from the most important problem in the state to political party and ideology.

The poll finds that the economy, healthcare, drugs, crime are first and foremost on the minds of Arkansas.

Digging deeper, one of the current issues featured in the poll includes this question:
Do you favor laws that would make it more difficult for a woman to get an abortion, favor laws that would make it easier to get an abortion or should no change be made to existing abortion laws? Response: The response from 1999 to this year hovers around 45 percent for "more difficult" and around 12 percent for "easier."

Do you think abortions should be legal under any circumstances, legal only under certain circumstances or illegal in all circumstances? Response: 18-percent said illegal, 61 percent answered "depends."

The 2017 Arkansas Poll was compiled by Dr. Janine A. Parry, Poll Director and Professor of Political Science at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. The mission of the Arkansas Poll is to supply timely, accurate, and impartial public opinion information on matters of policy and politics to public officials, researchers, students, and the public.

Methodology and Sample Information
Between Oct. 12 and Oct. 22, 2017, Issues & Answers Network, Inc. completed 801 telephone interviews among a random sample of adult Arkansans. Forty percent of all respondents interviewed use their cell phones for all or most of their calls.

The survey’s margin of error statewide is +/- 3.5 percentage points, meaning that we are 95 percent confident that the actual result lies within 3.5 percentage points (in either direction) of the result our sample produced.

Employing guidelines established by the American Association for Public Opinion Research, the poll’s overall cooperation rate was 28%. The figure for cell phone sample was 23%. This figure reflects completed surveys as a percentage of all eligible individuals contacted.
