PRAIRIE COUNTY, Ark. - A small Arkansas community is dealing with a big problem. A sewage pipe accidentally joined to a water pipe in Prairie County.
The board president of East Prairie County Public Water Authority says they are a victim of circumstances after a construction crew put the pipes together incorrectly.
Frank Sutton, with East Prairie County Public Water Authority, is been getting samples of the water and making sure it's clear of sewage.
"We've been working on it ever since we were aware of the situation," said Sutton.
The Water Authority's board president says a construction crew working on Interstate 40 put together a water line with a sewage line causing a big problem for about 50 customers. It forced a mandatory boil order.
Lana Davenport is one of the customers affected. She's been dealing with this problem for more than a week.
"I flushed two or three times and I thought I never seen it that dirty. Now I know why," said Davenport.
It's back to being clear, but still not safe to use yet.
"It's just a mess. It's havoc everywhere you turn around. I don't know what they are going to do," said Davenport.
Lana hasn't used the water, but wants to be safe than sorry. "I'm going to take a trip to the doctor to get screened and everything to make sure."
The customers have to get the okay from the Health Department to use the water again and hopes a mistake like this get stopped up.
The construction company, Parsons, says in a statement, "Parsons is aware that identical sewer and water lines that were damaged during clean-up efforts after the record flood event in May/June along the White River were inadvertently connected during work related to the I-40 White River Bridge and rest stop project. We have been assisting the local water department in correcting the situation and are conducting a thorough review of this incident."
