LITTLE ROCK, Ark. --A 21-year-old is behind bars after police say she crashed an SUV into a church, injuring a 4-year-old child.
A pile of debris, and a board placed at the edge of the House of Bethesda Christian Faith Church. "I walked over and it looked like the back of the warehouse, had been blown up in some kind of explosion," says Ben Hartz, a witness. The SUV crashed into a church daycare on the corner of Springer and Roosevelt in Little Rock. "It almost shook the ground it was so loud," says Hartz.
Little rock police say 21-year-old Chantae Burton was behind the wheel of a Chevy Tahoe -- that was reported stolen around 7:30 Wednesday morning. A short time later -- officers found the Tahoe driving down Roosevelt avenue near MLK, before the driver pulled over, dropped off a passenger and sped off. "It goes east on Roosevelt, at a high rate of speed, officer engages in a pursuit at that moment and activates all of her emergency equipment," says Officer Steve Moore, with LRPD.
Moore says officers stopped chasing Burton after they lost sight of the SUV."Then a call comes into dispatch of an accident of a vehicle running into a daycare or a church," says Moore.Police say a 4-year-old from the daycare was pinned under the truck. At least six other children were inside."I saw one of the boys run out with blood all over his face, just hoping there were no fatalities," says Hartz. We're told the 4-year-old did have bone fractures, but is expected to be OK.
Burton faces charges of fleeing, careless driving, theft by receiving and failure to stop after accident with injury.
