LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - In 2010, a Little Rock woman started a t-shirt company called Hillcrest Waterbugs. The first design was a waterbug and sold almost instantly.
Owner Jennifer Cox said, "It started as just a joke, I live in the Hillcrest neighborhood and we always call cockroaches 'Waterbugs.'"
It wasn't roach shirts that led to the success of Hillcrest Waterbugs, but rather a Southern contraction.
Cox said, "We came up with the 'Y'all shirt' which was the state of Arkansas with the word y'all in it, and from there, that shirt blew up."
"We made them for every single state in the South, we made them for SEC team, and anything and everything in between."
The 'Y'all' design made its rounds. Cox told us it was featured on NBC and MSNBC, and it is still available on the Waterbugs website. One of the new hot designs is about a state of mind that says 'Be Kind To Each Other.' The shirt represents a mindset this company is passionate about.
Cox said, ""Every shirt we make has a positive mission statement on it. Everything. It's all about kind, it's all about doing good, it's all about representing your state in a positive way."
